Bayan asks Senate to make swift and decisive action versus Charter Change resolution

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and allied organizations trooped to the Senate today and urged Senators to make a swift and decisive action against the proposed Charter Change resolution.

In a protest outside the Senate building, Bayan warned that ChaCha is anti-Filipino since it will allow foreigners greater control of our land, resources, and economy. ChaCha could also lead to the removal of prohibition on the establishment of foreign bases.

Bayan opposes Resolution of Both Houses 6 which proposes revisions to the Constitution’s provisions against 100% foreign ownership of public utilities, schools and the advertising industry. The revisions to these provisions will be done by inserting the phrase “unless otherwise provided by law” which gives Congress extraordinary powers to change the Constitution simply by passing a law.

The so-called amendments, which will in fact be major revisions, is a sell-out of our national interests and solidifies foreign control over the domestic economy.

Bayan added that ChaCha will not be limited to so-called economic reforms and its proponents in the House of Representatives are pursuing it for the self-serving motive of removing term limits and further entrenching the dominance of political dynasties. ChaCha’s main beneficiary is no other than President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos and his family.

After rejecting ChaCha, legislators should focus on laws that will benefit ordinary citizens such as a legislated wage increase, expansion of social services, genuine agrarian reform, support for national industrialization and other laws in support of local producers.

Bayan challenged Senators to mobilize their supporters and constituents to campaign against ChaCha. Bayan said the Senators and other elected officials should link arms with all citizens who are ready to take action and protest against ChaCha.
