Bayan condemns overkill police deployment; calls on people to support Transport Strike and reject the phaseout of jeepneys
Bayan condemned the police and the Marcos Jr government for harassing participants of the ongoing transport strike.
The overkill police deployment in Metro Manila, intended to prevent people from showing solidarity to the transport strike, reveals the brutal mindset of authorities and their shameful indifference to the plight of jeepney drivers and operators.
Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns and demands of transport stakeholders, the Marcos Jr government mobilized the police to suppress the transport strike and silence those who are about to lose their jobs and livelihoods once individual jeepney franchises are set to expire this week.
The excessive, disproportionate, and unjust police response to the strike reveals the paranoia of authorities and their malicious intent to downplay how the looming phaseout of jeepneys would exacerbate the transport crisis in the country.
The Marcos Jr government does not want the people to know that the so-called PUV modernization program is a corrupt scheme favoring foreign corporations and big business interests.
Bayan enjoins the commuting public to defy state intimidation by extending solidarity with jeepney drivers and operators and the transport strike. The protest will continue until Labor Day which serves as another opportunity to highlight the anti-poor, anti-worker, and anti-Filipino programs and polices of the Marcos Jr presidency.
The strike and the Labor Day protest will show the people’s unity and commitment to fight for better services, and the upholding of the people’s rights and welfare.
