We condemn the issuance of another warrant of arrest against legal activists from the Cordillera and Ilocos, this time on the trumped-up charge of Rebellion. Various leaders have been included in this warrant issued by Abra Judge Corpus Alzate on January 24, 2023.
The respondents in the case apparently are not aware of these charges against them. Jennifer Awingan has been reportedly arrested in Baguio today. We denounce this latest attack on IP activists and rights defenders.
We condemn the continuing weaponization of the law that is used to arrest and detain activists without bail. No due process was observed in this case as the respondents say that they were not duly informed of the case.
This must stop. Prosecutors and judges should not allow themselves to be used in these trumped-up charges and rights vioalations.
