BAYAN: DISMISS TRUMPED UP CASES VS SATUR OCAMPO, FRANCE CASTRO, AND LUMAD SCHOOL DEFENDERS
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan expresses solidarity with former BAYAN MUNA Partylist Rep. Satur Ocampo, Act Teachers Party-List Rep. France Castro, and 16 members of the National Solidarity Mission whose trumped up case in Davao is set for promulgation on July 15.
They were arrested on November 28, 2018 after extending support to students and volunteer teachers of Lumad schools facing harassment in Davao del Norte. They were charged with “other acts of child abuse” and accused of endangering the lives of Lumad students.
Bayan said the case is emblematic of the weaponization of laws and judicial processes against human rights defenders and critics of the Rodrigo Duterte government. The harassment case was intended to cut off the support provided to Lumad schools. Authorities sought to criminalize solidarity by prosecuting
members of the National Solidarity Mission.
Bayan bemoaned that IP communities remain militarized six years after the attack on Lumad schools in Davao del Norte. Bayan said the Marcos Jr government is responsible for the continuing human rights abuses inflicted on Lumad communities and brutal counterinsurgency operations that disrupt the lives and education of Lumad children.
Bayan stands with Ka Satur, Rep France, and the Talaingod 18 as they await the promulgation of their case. We salute their defiance and their continuing solidarity to Lumad communities. We call for the dismissal of their case based on fabricated evidence, and for state forces to stop the attacks targeting Lumad schools and communities.
