BAYAN REACTION TO MARCOS PROCLAMATION SPEECH: ‘YOUR PRESIDENCY MIRRORS DUTERTE’S NOTORIOUS LEGACY’
Marcos Jr enumerating the sins of his predecessor is ironic because the same misdeeds are still happening today.
In a desperate bid to restore his eroded credibility, Marcos Jr. denounces the Dutertes for crimes he himself carries out with impunity as the nation’s president.
Tokhang was renamed Bida but drug-related killings persist. Government neglect of public health during the pandemic is still evident in the budget cuts imposed on the health sector.
Marcos rightly claimed that Duterte was a puppet of China and turned the country into a gambling haven for foreigners. The same treasonous foreign policy is adopted by his government which allowed the US to expand its military presence in the country while his Maharlika Fund entices foreigners to plunder the nation’s patrimony.
If Duterte was an epitome of evil governance, then Marcos is guilty of enabling impunity by aligning with and supporting the Dutertes during the 2022 elections.
Marcos became critical against the Dutertes only after the collapse of the so-called ‘uniteam’ government. The truth is that both clans should be held accountable for their corruption, human rights abuses, and puppetry to foreign powers.
Marcos highlighted the crimes of the Duterte presidency in a bid to frame the narrative at the start of the election campaign. As we pursue impeachment against VP Duterte and the ICC prosecution of former President Duterte, we also equally seek accountability for the continuing crisis, criminality, corruption, puppetry, and impunity under the Marcos presidency.
The election season should not distract us from condemning the failure of the Marcos government to bring down the prices of goods, and uplift the conditions of the poor.
Marcos agitated his supporters by condemning the Dutertes even if the same damning words can be used to describe his leadership.
