Congress obsession over Charter Change hurts ordinary Filipinos
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and allied organizations held a protest outside the Batasan Complex during the plenary interpellation of the Charter Change resolution (Resolution of Both Houses 7).
Bayan condemned legislators for wasting public money on a divisive measure intended to benefit foreigners, cronies, and incumbent officials. Bayan warned that ChaCha will entail billions of pesos in funding which could have been used to address the inadequate delivery of social services.
Bayan reiterated its opposition against the Marcos-backed ChaCha which will further open up the country’s resources to foreign plunder and exploitation. Bayan warns that the ultimate aim of ChaCha proponents is to remove term limits and entrench the dominance of the Marcoses and political dynasties.
Bayan reminded Congress that instead of the self-serving and anti-Filipino ChaCha, they should focus on urgent people’s concerns such as wage hike bill, support for farmers, and expansion of social services. Bayan said that Congress will end its sessions before the Holy Week without passing any significant measure demanded by minimum wage earners, farmers hurting from importation, and jeepney drivers whose livelihoods remain under threat.
Bayan said that like Marcos who is in another junket trip, Congress has been promoting the sell-out of the country’s patrimony and labor through ChaCha.
