February 25, 2023 marks 37 years since the ouster of the dictator, Ferdinand Marcos Sr, in what was the culmination of years of our people’s struggle against fascist tyranny. It would be the first EDSA anniversary with another Marcos back in Malacañang, Ferdinand Marcos Jr no less. The Palace has so far avoided questions by the media on whether or not Marcos will observe the special holiday that commemorates his family’s ouster and the people’s victory.
In his 8 months in office, Marcos Jr has presided over the worst inflation (8.7% ) in 14 years, rapidly rising poverty levels, worsening chronic unemployment and underemployment, crushing public debt, the return of US military bases, unrelenting violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, and blatant corruption as well as in-fighting within his administration.
Whether it is the frequent trips abroad or the Maharlika Investment Fund being railroaded in Congress, taxpayers money are clearly being squandered by the Marcoses. From the time before the 2022 elections up to the present, the Marcos political dynasty has been wantonly revising history and whitewashing the crimes of the dictatorship. Even legislative measures such as Charter change are aimed at benefiting the Marcoses and their bid to stay in power.
The Marcoses were kicked out through the EDSA uprising, but they are back with a vengeance. Frequent-flyer Marcos Jr is at the helm of a regime that is focused more on image-building and power accumulation than in addressing the people’s basic needs.
Pinatalsik na nga ng EDSA, pero bumalik pa para muling ilugmok ang bansa.
On February 25, we are calling on all democratic and patriotic forces to come together, hold different actions and denounce the worsening Philippine situation under the regime of Marcos Jr.
